Last Spring, photographer Patrik Giardino was commissioned by Citi, a partner of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), to capture forty-two Para athletes preparing for regional and global competitions. In an effort to shift perceptions of people with disabilities Giardino was tasked with crafting imagery that highlighted each Para athletes unique handicap. Months before the shoot he began researching each athlete in order to better understand their sport and how they compete. His goal was to be “a fly on the wall” and produce a documentarian style of work. Still and motion content of many of the athletes was captured during an eleven day shoot in Dubai during the Para Olympics qualifiers. A seasoned lensman, Giardino rose to meet challenges, such as limited time with talent and the technical challenge of creating cohesive imagery across multiple shoot locations and lighting conditions. Giardino’s energy behind the camera was matched by each athlete’s deep passion for their sport. The resulting imagery is a remarkable representation of the vast diversity within athletic excellence.
