Photographer / Director Sam Kaplan was born in Boston, MA, and studied art history and sculpture at
Wesleyan University. Sam shoots for a wide range of clients including Budweiser, Gatorade, Goodby Silverstein & Partners,
Google, Kraft, Leo Burnett, Fortune, Men’s Health and The New York Times Magazine. His greatest pleasures are problemsolving,
conceptual thinking and being a generally nice human.
Prisms provide a unique opportunity to explore both the motion of light and color. For this project
Sam sought to explore the seemingly random beauty of the movement of light through prisms in the
controlled and repeatable environment of motion control. By using the highly controllable system
of motion control he was able to explore the more open and free wheeling aspects of color
spectrums in motion. When you are able to accurately repeat the movement of an object - here the
turning of a prism and light - it opens up much greater freedom to explore the movement of prism
spectrums and the spectacular interactions it creates. This highly technical process allowed Sam to
capture these beautifully controlled moments.
