Cesar Banares is an Associate Creative Director/Art Director living and working in Vancouver Canada. Specializing in UI design and User Experience during design school, he was selected into a coop program at EA sports. During the 10 years at EA, he spent 7 years leading the UX Innovation team as the UX Brand Art Director. Following his heart he transitioned into the Fashion/Sports Apparel retail industry and has worked in-house with Aritzia (Canadian clothing brand) and is currently an ACD/Art Director at lululemon.

1.)     What was your very first job?

 Co-op program in my 3rd year of Design school with EA Sports as a UI Designer 

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I’m an in-house ACD/Art Director at Lululemon and lead a  team of designers, copywriters, videographers and photographers. My team focuses on Brand Evolution/re-defining future state of the brand, Product campaigns/collaborations and Creative Direction for each season.

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? 

What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? Skateboarding as kid opened up the creative world for me. Skate deck graphics, skate magazine photography and fashion.

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? I look to several places to inspire myself. I find inspiration through making music, travel, architecture and creating in other mediums outside my comfort zone. An example of this would be apprenticing as a Barber for a year and continuing to cut hair for a select clientele.

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

Hmmm, I would say the work I’m in this moment with Lululemon, trying to re-define and evolve the brand on multiple touchpoints.

 

6.)     Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

We are starting to commission more external work within photography, film and the possibilities of VR + AR.
