In his 25-year career, Marcos has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, creating visually compelling work ranging from traditional media to fully integrated digital and social media campaigns. He has both general market and Hispanic agency experience. His work has been recognized by several prestigious industry organizations including the New York Art Directors Club, New York Festivals and the Globes. Marcos has enjoyed working with are Cerveza Tecate, Coca-Cola North America, Gibson Guitars, JCPenney, Blue Bell Creameries, Campbell's Soup Company, V8, and Whataburger.

1.)     What was your very first job? 

My first job as a teenager was selling t-shirts at a tourist trap shop along the Riverwalk. 

However, my first “real” job after I graduated from college was as jr. art director for a Hispanic advertising agency. My primary clients were Tecate Cerveza and JC Penny.

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

I am the Executive Creative Director for an independent advertising group comprised of three agencies. Each agency focuses on a unique market: General market, Hispanic, and digital marketing. There’s a great mix and match of talent between the three. I see my role as helping everyone push the limits of their creativity, just as I push mine – all while helping our clients achieve their marketing goals.  

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

I remember always being busy with fine art projects as a kid. But it wasn’t until I interned at an ad agency in college, working crazy long hours, that I realized I loved what I was doing. It was the only thing that didn’t feel like work. I still feel that way. I often get immersed in a project and lose track of time. Just ask my wife.

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I am always trying new things and going out of my comfort zone to absorb as much as I can of the world around me. Of course, I keep up with industry award-winning work and shows, as well as the vibrant art scene in San Antonio. I also love working with kids, especially high school kids, inspiring them to choose a career in advertising. We have a wonderful non-profit here, Say Sí, that provides kids with hands-on lessons as well as mentoring in a variety of artistic media. When in-person learning resumes, the agency will be partnering with Say Sí to offer apprenticeships to young artists interested in advertising and marketing. 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

In 2013 I did guerrilla installations downtown in support of the San Antonio Food Bank. During our annual public art festival, Luminaria, I tagged dumpsters with messaging that included a hashtag for donating to the food bank. The installation was paired with a PSA and helped raise food donation levels for this vital resource.

6.)     Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? (ie photo, film, social, experiential, vr, etc)

Innovation and fresh ideas are all around us. I seek out those new ideas, not just to experience the awe of them, but to bask in the line-crossing they represent. Right now what’s grabbing my attention is using AR on mobile devices to create a higher touch.
