Matthew Wright is the Vice President of Creative at Gap, directing the brand across advertising campaigns, retail, social and gap.com. Over the past two decades, he has led creative strategy for iconic brands Levi Strauss and Nike.

1. What was your very first job? 

My very first job was framing artwork. My first design job was interning at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

 

2. Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

Starting conversations, establishing new relationships and allowing the creative team to do what they’re meant to do, killer work!

 

3. How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Was there a train of events that brought you where you are today?

Discovering photography was key, starting in middle school and then further in high school & college. Then understanding how I could bring photography into the design world was the

perfect marriage.

 

4. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

Travel, nature and film have always been my inspiration. Gaining perspective is a constant struggle.

 

5. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation rather than its recognition or industry "success," what would it be?

I continue to try and evolve my landscape photography. It’s my outlet to the product focused retail world. I keep trying to tell stories with it even though it comes from a very personal space.
