questionnaire

Q: What was your very first job?

A: Growing up on an organic farm in central Illinois, I was basically working since I could walk.

Q: Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

A: On paper I am a Sr Art Director, but that is such a broad term. My work is really all over the place. I’m doing everything from concepting, overseeing/ leading projects, illustrating, UX/ UI design, you name it and I’ve probably touched it at some point.

Q: How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Was there a train of events that brought you where you are today?

A: I’ve been in the creative world my entire life; I just didn’t realize it. I’ve always been drawing and creating new things, just took me a long time to realize I could make a career out of it. It took going to the Creative Circus for me to really know this industry was right for me.

Q: In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

A: Over the past few years my sources of inspiration have changed tremendously. It used to be just browsing award show catalogs and viewing content online, but lately I’m finding that separating myself from the advertising industry and viewing other creative outlets is more inspirational. For example, in typography I like to explore old rural towns across the Midwest and find faded sign paintings on the aged buildings, then for more digital work I look to video games and animated movies. There is just so much creativity happening around us all the time, it’s just good to take a break from the laptop and look around.

Q: If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation rather than its recognition or industry "success," what would it be?
A: Recently my team launched an online video game we created in partnership with Active Theory for Trolli Gummy worms called the Deliciously Dark Escape. It was a terrific blend of storytelling, retro design and top-notch development. Was crazy rewarding seeing all the pieces come together to deliver something not many brands have done before.

Q: Which creative disciplines do you commission most, and are most interested in seeing more of and why? Which of these disciplines are you most interested in seeing at CONNECTIONS? (ie photo, film, production, social, experiential, vr, cgi, animation etc)

A: There has been a large shift in advertising where consumers don’t just want to see ads, hey actually hate ads. For an ad to be successful there must be a benefit for the consumer, whether that is through partnerships, entertainment, experiences. So lately we’ve been commissioning a lot of 3D/ designers and animators as well as development shops that have AR/VR capabilities.
