Michael has a true passion for photography, typography and graphic design. After receiving his design diploma he worked at JvM before working in Australia for a year.Joining Serviceplan in 2009 he became quickly responsible for several international BMW projects. His involvement became visible e.g. launching the first-ever BMW i8, the BMW 7series, BMW M2 and further brandshaper. In his latest position as part of the Creative Board he takes care of BMW’s international needs and supports national campaigning and so as for the French, Chinese and e.g. Arabic markets.

Michaels strength is based on strong creative conceptual thougts combined with brave art direction. His work appeals fresh, unseen and unique. Combined with several years ofshooting experiences his portfolio covers large fields of peoples-, car-, studio- and lifestyle-photograpy. His work is internationally known and awarded.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now? 

My first job was for the brand MINI. I was heavily overstrained by the level of requested art-direction.

Looking back now: I did the best thing back than: observe the others, suggest solutions, absorb knowledge and apply these knowledges later. A routine I’m still using nowadays.

Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.

At the moment I’ve the freedom to conceptionally and executional work on national and international know brands. I enjoy the power of a good and simple concept brought to life by state-of-the-art execution. This includes for me every field of a holistic brand communication from on- and offline channels.

How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?

The train that caught me in the past is the ongoing power that keeps me moving in the wide industry of advertising, design and branding: sheer entertainment. Certain ads simple caught my attention back in the days, the made me laugh, think, smile. I spotted a power in/behind advertising. I wanted to learn about the potential of brand-communication to reach out for people, to simply entertain people.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

To keep my output relevant in the industry I find inspiration outside the industry. Art in general and especially streetart/urban art is a one huge pool of inspiration. The other pool is constantly in my heart and head and source for endless new ideas: my family including a great wife and 3 lovely kids.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?

One project comes to mind immediately: LeBecks, the legendary beer can from Becks. Our beer-clients Becks had a very comprehensible challenge: canned beer was not doing good in sales based on a very bad image. We tackled this issue by redesigning the beer can making it look like a champagne-flute. Great thing was not the very positive feedback around the globe by all the awardshows. Rather the feedback from everybody seen and touched the can. There was an immediate reaction all the time. The product and its design simply mattered to people. That felt great. 

A second project I want to mention is “LIFEBOAT – The experiment”. It is tough to work for an NGO. Beside a clear vision to safe refugee-life’s there are a lot of limitations both politically and budget-wise. We raised awareness national and international without a single media-euro. We brought back the topic in the news and peoples-heads.
