Gonçalo is a Portuguese Creative& Art Director and an advertising teacher based in Berlin. Helping brands solve their communication problems through graphical design and strategic thinking is his passion and he doesn’t like to write in the third person. Gonçalo has a strong traditional background but has also developed work for several strong digital clients. He has 2 years of experience in-house and almost 5 years in agencies like LOLA Mullen Lowe, FCB, Kiss and Innocean Berlin where he currently works. He has worked for a wide range of brands in various areas such as Auto, Telecommunications, Finance, Beauty, both in the Portuguese and the German markets. During this time he saw his work recognised more than 40 times, locally and internationally.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now?
My first job ever was at a pastry shop. And since I didn’t have a proper age to work I was illegal there, so I was just helping in minor tasks to get some money. Funny times. My first job in the industry was at a small design studio as an Intern Designer, here in Germany. At that time, it was an internship that was really helpful because I learnt more about design and got a better understanding about the market, which gave me the guts to live abroad and fight for an international career.
Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.
I develop campaign concepts and executions that helps our clients communicate their products or services. The hardest part? Bring those ideas to life.
How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?
I studied sciences in high school… It was really painful, I wasn't good at it - a total drama for my mom. Then I went to a different area. I started studying marketing and advertising and I instantly felt it was perfect match. It was a shot in the dark, but sometimes you need to be lucky too. And I was very fortune with that blind shot.
In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?
Many people say you need to know everything about the industry. You need to know what is going on in the business and use this as a form of inspiration. I think they're right, you need to do this if you want to have references, for sure. But more than that, I like to have new experiences, like concerts, exhibitions, traveling to new places, documentaries about different areas (like cooking, sports, music or politics) and so on ... I guess you can only create something new if you open your senses to new references, to new fields and new areas. If you spend your time just searching what’s going on in advertising, you'll never be able to create something new.
If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?
I think the last work is what defines you and you need to focus on what’s next and try to do better. So, more than the recognition, it's about how you feel about the work. For these reasons, my last campaign (Grannies, for Kia) was special to me, because it was my first one in Germany and I am only here since January, so having the possibility to produce work in such a short period is something that makes me proud and confident for the future.
