I’m a designer living in Mortlake, London with my wife Sue, our little girls Tabitha and Polly, and our budgie Buddy.

I grew up in Biddulph near Stoke-on-Trent, and moved to London when I started at Goldsmiths College. After my degree show, I got my first job at Clear Channel in 2006 where I designed billboards and bus shelter posters, before moving to Orange in 2007 - which became Everything Everywhere - to design, art direct and manage brand identity. 

In 2011 I moved to City Hall to head up the design team, and for three years I directed integrated campaigns for London. Then, in March 2014 I joined Topman to direct digital creative and to lead its photography and digital design studios. In November 2016 I joined Sainsbury's as a Design Director in its Experience Design team.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now? 
My first job was working on the music and photo counters at Boots the chemist - it feels like a different age - when digital cameras were only just starting to be commonplace - and most people still bought CDs and 1-hour prints from film!

Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.
I lead a design team working on many digital products for Sainsbury's customers, for example - grocery ecommerce, occasion food and one-hour delivery among other things. My job is to bring together designers and their product teams including engineers and managers to create a consistent, holistic customer experience. We continually ask if the experience is what customers want (or may want in the future) and if it is distinct to our brand.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? and which train of events did bring you to where you are today?
I always loved drawing and art when I was young and growing up I looked forward to classes where I got to make things. I think in my early teens I realized that there was a whole industry that I could work in and get paid to be visual and creative. Both art and D&T lessons at school and music, especially artwork for dance music, and fashion helped me see this.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?
Walking around London, going to exhibitions, looking at the rich visual language of the city, whether that is old tile patterns on the tube or the experience of eating out in a café - it's normally outside in the real world where inspiration strikes. I love to reflect and think while I'm out for a run by the river.
I also believe that social media, from Instagram to LinkedIn have also sped up and democratized the sharing of creative work and thinking. And, of course, working in a big team of designers and creatives also exposes me to new ideas and ways of creating.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?
I have a soft spot for a New Year's Eve fireworks poster we ran on the Underground in 2012. After a complete brand refresh for London we went for a single abstract geometric line burst to sell this world class event, supported by typography in Akzidenz Grotesk. The whole piece was in silver foil on black and was wonderfully spare, which gave it more stand out.
