Ian was born in Liverpool. He studied fine–art painting at Chelsea School of Art, before attending the Royal College of Art, where his work became increasingly photography-based. This led to an unexpected offer to join the launch team of Esquire magazine as art department junior. He progressed to become art director, championing photography at the heart of the magazine – commissioning lengthy photo–reportage features and putting gritty portraits of men on the cover, in the face of the prevailing men's magazine trend for semi–dressed women as cover stars. In 2003 he left Esquire, along with the editor and deputy editor, to set up Show Media, with the initial idea of producing both private magazines for luxury brands and consumer titles for other publishing companies. Over the past decade, Show Media has grown into a full–service creative agency with a team of 25 in Shoreditch, London. It has a diverse client base, including some of the most prestigious names in fashion, luxury goods, watches, jewellery, travel, drinks and property. With an editorial aesthetic at its core, Show Media specialises in intelligent content creation for print and digital platforms, as well as providing design, brand identity, advertising and consultancy services. Commissioning high-quality photography remains a cornerstone of Ian's day–to–day work.
