Dino is strange. Good strange. He is a trained designer, coder, illustrator, musician, electronics engineer, mechanic and tinkerer of everything digital. His 22-year career has seen him work for a number of digital focused entertainment and marketing companies including the BBC, Disney, Digital Outlook and Mind Candy. His role as director of technology and innovation at WCRS allows him to bring his eclectic yet practical experiences together to create ground-breaking digital work that people care about.

  1. What was your very first job? 
    Ignoring stacking shelves in the soaps and detergents aisle at my local supermarket, my first proper media job was back in 1993 at a multi-media company called Media Projects International, specialising in exhibitions, theme park rides and interactive kiosks. One of our biggest jobs was the Millennium Dome body zone.

  2. Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 
    I’m the Director of Innovation and Technology at ad agency WCRS, part of the Engine Group. My job is to be on constant lookout for new, useful and game-changing technologies our clients can benefit from. In simple terms, I have to know a little bit about everything from AI and neuroscience to the latest media specs and phone features. Put even more simply, I join dots.

  3. How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 
    From the age of 5 I wanted to be a cartoonist. When home computers appeared in the early 1980s, I was first on the scene. It wasn’t long before I was mixing the two, making games and low-res graphics where others were simply doing dry, nerdy stuff. Even age 13, I could see the power of being a creative thinker with a technical twinkle in my eye. My career has been a wonderfully unconventional mix of the two ever since.

  4. In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 
    It’s kinda my job to be honest. If there’s one skill I have (and this sounds lame) it’s keeping an open, positive mind to everything and everyone. I do a huge amount of research every day and my approach is always “Not sure how, but could probably use this in the future”. I also find rolling up my sleeves and being practical is a great way to know what’s actually possible. Too often, new directions are rejected because there isn’t somebody in the room saying it’s totally possible... and turning up the next day with a demo. I try to be that guy.

  5. If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?
    The project I always mention at dinner parties to explain what I do is the Women’s Aid “Look at me” billboard from a few years ago. We pioneered the (mis)use of face recognition in Ocean Outdoor’s digital billboards to detect when people were actually looking at the poster - or not. The billboard featured the bruised face of a domestic violence victim. If you looked at the poster, the bruises started to disappear. If you walked past and ignored it, quite literally, nothing would change. It still gives me goosebumps today knowing how a single billboard campaign made such a positive difference to domestic violence awareness in the UK.
