Amanda Macbeth has over 20 years experience in the design industry both agency side and in house, working for brands such as VW, Lindt, Waterstones and Great Ormond Street Hospital. She joined Molton Brown in 2012 and leads an in-house team which delivers store design, campaign and POS as well as editorial and packaging for the luxury London brand.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now?
While at school, I worked on the photography counter at Boots back in the day when they had what they called the Sound and Vision department. I learnt a lot about cameras and processing but more importantly I was trained in customer service and being customer centric, skills which I still use every day.

Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails. 
I am responsible for the teams which manage all creative and artwork for Molton Brown campaigns, editorial, packaging and store design as well as the visual development of the brand. We are a small but perfectly formed team with 90% of creative being handled in-house.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today? 
I am fortunate in that I always knew that I wanted to do something creative and at the age of about 15 I narrowed that down to graphic design. Architecture was another potential route but I ruled this out when my math teachers laughed out loud at the suggestion!! I love working for British brands and have been fortunate to do so for most of my career (Waterstones, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Molton Brown).

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 
Inspiration can come from absolutely anywhere at any time. There is no one place that I go for this.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?
It would be the development of portrait photography for Great Ormond Street Hospital during my time there as Design Manager. When I first started, I spent hours in their phenomenal archives absorbing the incredible history not only of the hospital but the NHS. I came across Cecil Beaton and David Bailey shots in the hospital and there was a compassion and a connection with the children in their portraits which was honest but not exploitative. This had been lost in the intervening years and I worked with several very talented photographers to find a contemporary interpretation of this which resulted in very successful images which supported fundraising and hospital communications. This was a job like no other because it is a place like no other and it was a real privilege to have a role in a very small part of its history.
