Susan HOUSER

Sr. Producer | NIKE

Susan Houser grew up within jogging distance of Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. To this day, she fondly recalls the first pair of Nike Cortez sneakers she wore with her high school cheerleading uniform. Susan’s journey at Nike began answering snail mail from customers. This position gave her a unique opportunity to learn about all areas of the company. As Nike started to grow their online business, Susan joined the team and found her dream job of producing content for both editorial and sell-in photography. Her success as a producer comes from her ability to learn and respect each person’s role on a photo shoot and connecting the dots. “Watching the right talent come together at a shoot to make beautiful pictures is a thrill,” she said. “That’s my day job…my main job is raising a daughter to be a good person and know her options for the future are unlimited.”

What was your very first job?

Working the drive-thru window at Basco Burgers in Cornelius, Oregon

Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

I’m the Sr. Photo Producer for Global Brand Imaging.  Currently, I am involved in producing creative content for Nike.com editorial and sell photography.  My daughter says my mom tells people what to do to get things done.

How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life you credit to this discovery? What was the train of events that brought you to where you are today?

My dad is a painter and photographer, so seeing and talking about art was part of my upbringing. I was lucky to have someone take a chance on me during the ground floor of the Nike.com start up.  That job also came with the opportunity to be part of larger location photo shoots to cover print, in-store and online needs.  On my first location shoot I felt like a fish out of water, but fell in love with the gypsy-like feeling of a band of creatives coming together to make art.  Making sure the creative vision stays on track and on budget became an exciting challenge.

In your constantly changing, growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative, and relevant?

Every season we are evolving our content to be more premium with sport movement and new types of visual content, like video.  I get inspiration from continually striving to find new ways to bring Nike products to life and create imagery to inspire athletes with visual experiences.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry "success," what would it be?

A location shoot a couple of seasons ago.   We had a small budget to make northwest summer look like winter!  Dark early mornings, winding roads in a motorhome and long days.   I’m proud of the way creative thinking for locations and talent made it a success.
