Shawn is an Associate Creative Director currently hanging her hat at the agency Walton Isaacson where she oversees creative development for a vast array of brands including Sexy Hair, Nike, Little Goat, Hefty and Country Financial. Shawn is a creative leader with a strong sense of design and passion for building smart strategic ideas. She has over a decade of experience building brands and developing 360-degree campaigns. She also has a strong background in the spirits category –spending 5 years internally at Beam Suntory­–where she worked on brands such as Jim Beam, Cruzan Rum, Courvoisier and Sauza Tequila.

1.)        What was your very first job? 

    • My very first job out of advertising school was with a small sized agency in Chicago called Lisa P. Maxwell. Although my time at this agency was short, it left a lasting impression on my life. This job was responsible for introducing me to some of my very best, life long, friends and the wonderful man I now call my husband.

2.)        Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

    • I love my job. It is hard, you work sometimes tirelessly and you are constantly putting your ideas on the shooting line…but I honestly couldn’t see myself doing anything else. In my current role I am responsible with oversight and development of brand campaigns. I work with a small team of creatives to ideate and develop creative work that will help drive the business forward. I also help foster strong relationships with clients so our team can truly understand their needs.

3.)        How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

    • When I graduated high school, I had no idea what I wanted to be “when I grew up.” I felt lost and unsure of who and what I was supposed to be. I started my undergrad at Marquette University up in Milwaukee WI. I spent 2 full years struggling to find my way and maintained an “undecided” major for the full duration. I was taking classes that I hoped would lead me down a path that I could focus on, but was finding it difficult to find something I wanted to put my heart and soul into…until I took a beginning advertising course. This class was everything to me. I wanted to learn everything, and spent my free time paging through books on iconic campaigns (like VW “Think Small”) and learning all I could about different agencies and the work they were doing. My professor, who I owe my entire career to, pulled me aside one day and told me that I needed to peruse a path of advertising, and that she heavily advised me to leave Marquette and go to a school that I could focus on building my portfolio. So, I took her advice, and left Marquette to finish off my undergrad at Columbia College where I found my way.

4.)        In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

    • I am inspired by the people around me, and the knowledge and diverse thinking that they all bring to the table. I try to know as much as I can about as many things as possible…but, lets face it, one person can’t be an expert at everything. So I gain inspiration by finding what others are passionate about and by having deep thoughtful conversations where they teach me all they can. And in return, I try to do the same. If we build a collection of passionate people in our lives, the inspiration for your next project will always be there.

5.)        If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

    • The work that I am most proud of is a project I am currently working on. I am working with an amazing woman entrepreneur who is building her own brand. Me and my team get the amazing opportunity to help make her dreams into a reality…and this, to me, is the most amazing part about my job.
