Maegin COOPER

SR Photo Stylist, Photo Art DIR | ULTRA BEAUTY

Maegin Cooper started her career in traditional advertising as an Art Director, learning how to story-tell visually. Developing her personal brand, she then worked in Interior Design for Nate Berkus Interiors, and eventually Photo Art Directing for CB2 and Crate & Barrel. Her passion for beautiful photography, content creation, home decor, and styling evolved her career into Conceptual Photo Art Direction and Styling for many household names on platforms such as e-commerce, print, and Social Media. Maegin is currently the Sr Photo Stylist for Ulta Beauty, spearheading the creative storytelling for the company on all product related visual platforms, in-store, online, social media, and print.

questionnaire

1.)     What was your very first job?

My first job was at Ogilvy & Mather, Chicago, working as an Art Director for all of SC Johnson doing social media, in-store displays, and shopper marketing.

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

As a Sr Photo Stylist, I am in charge of the visual look & feel for all photography in the studio and for the brand across the company. In the easiest terms, I start by creating mood-boards based off of the seasonal campaigns that then translate into our photos visually in the Magazine’s, In-Store, Online, Social and internal brand work. Styling the photos on-set alongside a team of photographers & designers with props or textures to make them look beautiful.

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

I have always been “creative” since I can remember. However, when it came to my career path I was lucky. I discovered the creative world was right for me when I was in high school, specifically in the Yearbook Class as editor. I always knew I had a passion for photography, telling a story visually and making things look “pretty”, and that’s when I decided to make a career out of my passion. One of the most rewarding things as a creative is making a person stop and look at something you created and them resonating with your work emotionally.

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

As a Photo Stylist and Art Director, no two days are identical. Styling comes in so many different forms and I thrive on the variety of ways in which to execute it. I don’t feel I am in a “niche” speciality, so I am inspired every day by the work I am able do and keeping in tune with the creative community around me. Whether it’s following my favorite beauty influencer or home decor Instagram page, blog, or Pinterest. Following trends in all areas of design is something that interests me and I love. Also, keeping in touch with a community of like-minded people is very important to push me to grow and learn more with each day.

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Most recently. working with and for a Fortune 500 Company to help rebrand its image into the same values I live by, celebrating diversity and inclusion. Ulta Beauty has redefined the meaning of beauty, believing that it is for everyone regardless of age, size, ability, skintone culture or gender. Having my hands in on this project that spanned over the course of the last year and being able to take ownership over a piece of it visually was the most fulfilling and gratifying pieces of work I was able to participate in.
