questionnaire

1.) What was your very first job?

My fist job right out of school was in my hometown working at a small printing company. Being the only designer in the art department taught me a lot about printing and production. The pressman would scream at me if I didn’t get the mechanicals right and make their job harder. That’s why to this day, I’m very knowledgeable about production.

2.) Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

A CCO’s role is to be responsible and set the tone and environment for an agency’s creative culture and product. It entails really getting to know your staff and their true abilities. Balancing the art of motivation, encouragement with hard ass tactics and tender love.

3.) How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Was there train of events that brought you to where you are today?

Creativity has always been a part of me. I do remember knowing I had the ability as early as the 3rd grade. I just loved to draw and make cool things as a kid.

My teachers were extremely supportive as well as my family and my church community. The reason we are having this conversation today is really about my parents teaching me the importance of a strong work ethic. Which goes beyond talent. Another strong influence was being the underdog. As a Black kid from the South, a lot was stacked against me. I wanted to be the exception.

4.) In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?

I never have lost love for what I do or this industry. It starts there. Technology has changed this industry and does everyday. So it’s ever evolving . Plus the relationship with young creatives, mentoring as well as working alone side of them, that keeps you on your toes and connected.

5.) If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?

Easy, I did a campaign for the Underground Railroad Freedom Center located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It’s purpose was to aid in stamping out racial inequality so everyone could enjoy freedom. The campaign was called “The Power of One Voice.” The purpose was to demonstrate how one person alone could make stand against prejudice. It was recognized by the United Nations.
