1.)     What was your very first job?

 Golf caddy. 

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails.

 Executive Creative Director for Olson Engage – I’m accountable for the creative output of this agency – from broad creative strategies and breakthrough ideas to production and design.

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

We started a PR agency called Dig Communications in 2004 with seven people and I was basically an account leader. As we started winning more business and growing, we realized that tapping into the young talent and raw creativity of our team was allowing us to beat the huge old-guard agencies we were pitching and competing against … so we basically created a leadership role to try to keep that creative and cultural fire burning. And, since I’m a grown man who still dresses like a twelve-year-old, it seemed like a good job for me.

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

 

Working with people I care about and respect and who make me laugh.  

 

Shutting up and listening.

 

Being willing to change when our brilliant young staffers tell me that our work ISN’T as fresh, innovative or relevant as it should be.

 

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be?  

We created a watch for Jim Beam Apple that was basically just a clunky, accordion-style shot glass on a wristband that retailed for under $20. We launched on the same day that Apple – the historic, universe-altering, revolutionary technology deity – released their new Apple Watch, and Fortune actually wrote an article headlined “Jim Beam’s ‘Apple Watch’ Might Be Better Than Apple’s.”

 

A small moment, sure, but a strong case for “clever” nonetheless. We’ll take it.
