Chase Agnello-Dean is a meat eating, sports shooting Photographer with a background in photojournalism. He learned his particular brand of gruffness in the newsrooms of many Midwest papers from tiny towns to the Chicago Tribune. He enjoys shooting just about everything from Polaroids to Leica’s, but finds special joy in spending exorbitant amounts of money on lighting equipment and remotes. Chase has won several awards, but hates to brag, and helped publish several books. The last three sweeping biographies all had an eerily similar subject — a gorgeous hunk of metal named Stanley. In his spare time he sits with a glass of Hibiki Japanese Whisky, dreams of owning his very own a brisket smoker, and bothers his wife by leaving camera chargers around the house and making her write his bio.

1.)        What was your very first job? 

 

Photographer at the Decatur Herald & Review. Covered everything from fires, sports and the occasional pancake breakfast.

 

 

2.)        Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

 

I  lead the photo group in creation of content that is used across all departments in an effort to provide our viewers access into a world they would not otherwise be able to visit.

 

 

3.)        How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

 

It was the moment I first step foot in a dark room in high school. The smell, the solitude, the freedom to experiment and most importantly the people. I spent a long time in newspaper darkroom throughout the early part of my career and the darkroom was a refuge. A place where photographers could be photographers free from the  Influences of the newsroom. Thanks to the many darkrooms and some of the most incredible mentors I can pass my experience along to the next wave of photographers who have missed out on the comradery of the darkroom.

 

4.)        In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

 

Being around other creatives is good for your soul. Maybe not your liver, but nothing makes me happier than being able to have discussions about compositions, colors, styles with others.

 

 

5.)        If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

 

Our 2010 Stanley cup book was special to me. It simply encapsulates the release of 49 years of heartache, frustration and joy.
