Burcu is the Senior Global Marketing Manager at Beam Suntory in Chicago, responsible for Marketing Capabilities. Prior to joining Beam Suntory, Burcu spent 6 years at BBDO Worldwide, where she worked as Global Senior Strategist based out of its Istanbul, Dubai and Chicago offices, building brands in categories as diverse as airline, automotive, health care, home storage, pest control, skin care and snacks. And before that, Burcu was the Assistant Brand Planner at Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis. Burcu is a global citizen and a creative strategist, whose greatest passion is to connect the dots, tell stories, make things, and make things look beautiful.

1.)     What was your very first job? 

I worked as an Assistant Brand Planner at Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis.

 

2.)     Please describe, in your own words, what your job is and what work it entails. 

 

I currently lead the Marketing Capabilities function at Beam Suntory. My job is essentially to establish Beam Suntory’s marketing philosophy, marketing curriculum and functional marketing capabilities that are designed to address how we can achieve great brand building while growing talent and delivering a solid guidance to careers at Beam Suntory.  I work very closely with Cross-Functional and HR teams. What’s more, I listen to problems and strive to come up with simple solutions that can help connect the dots. 

 

3.)     How did you discover that the creative world was right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? What was there train of events that brought you to where you are today? 

My finance internship at Merrill Lynch made me realize that I don’t love numbers and Excel sheets as much as I love people and creativity. During my senior year at Macalester College, I took a Marketing class, which is when I knew exactly that I needed to work in a more creative, people-oriented environment.  

 

4.)     In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how do you find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant? 

I am inspired by the people in my life – my very talented friends, my family, and especially my sister, Ozge Sahin, who is an art photographer based out of Rome. 

  

5.)     If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, more for the creative work and innovation it required, rather than its recognition or industry “success,” what would it be? 

I give my 100% towards every piece of work or project, and had the pleasure to work on wonderful brands such as Jim Beam, Courvoisier, Hornitos, Snickers, Ziploc, Lay’s, Johnson’s Baby, and Mercedes Benz. It is impossible for me to pick just one right now.
