Joris Kuijpers, born in ‘s-Hertogenbosch 1971, is working in advertising since 1998. He started his career as a strategic advertising planner, as he was advised not to become an advertising creative because of his light color blindness.

But after two years of planning he decided, despite his color blindness, that he would like to be an art director.And so, in 2000 he started his career as a junior creative together with copywriter Dylan de Backer at Result DDB in Amstelveen.

In 2003 they moved to Lowe to come back three years later as creative directors for DDB Amsterdam. In addition, they took place in the Global Creative Council of the DDB Worldwide network.

In 2012 they were responsible for the successful creative merge between DDB and its digital daughter Tribal. One of the highlights was 2014, when the merged agency DDB & Tribal Amsterdam became agency of the year in Holland. As well in digital as traditional advertising.

Joris worked for clients as The Dutch Lottery, CentraalBeheer (Even Apeldoorn bellen), Volkswagen, McDonalds, Hertogijs, Iglo, Calve, Planet internet, KLM, Achmea, Riedel, Campina, Eneco, NS, Grolsch, Ziggo, Heineken, Inshared, De Volkskrant, C&A, VF corp., Adidas and Wolford.

He is one of the most awarded creatives in The Netherlands with many national and international awards at ADCN, Cannes Lions, One Show, Effies, New York Festivals, EurobestEpica, D&AD and the “GoudenLoekie”.

Since the beginning of 2018 Joris leads the creative of DDB & Tribal department by himself.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now? 
My first job was packing and sending knives and scissors for retailers in a wholesale company. I had this holiday job for 5 weeks and when I look back, the big lesson was that I never wanted to do production work anymore. Production is the opposite of creativity.

Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.
My current job is Executive creative director of DDB & Tribal, a full service ad agency. It is nothing more than in the end I am responsible for the creative output, the creatives and the designers. But thank god I can still do creative work myself as well.

How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?
I actually never discovered this. For me it felt like a great job where you could have a lot of fun. The moment we (me and my team mate) started to work as creatives in advertising and we realized we coiuld really execute our ideas, it only became more fun.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?
In the end everything is all about common sense. But it helps to keep your eyes and mind wide open. Then you may surprise yourself.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?
I don’t think one thing stays out. But the VW recall ad. Small, ugly and cheap… did a lot for almost no money.
