Janna STOLP

Creative Director | VIRTUE / VICE

Janna grew up in Münich, Leipzig and The Hague. After finishing the Hallo Academy for Applied Creativity in 2010, she joined BSUR Amsterdam with her creative partner, where they served brands like Moxy Hotels, Glenmorangie Whisky and BiFi for more than 5 years. Since 2016 she became a part of VIRTUE, the creative agency of VICE, to create more culturally relevant work. Which she is still passionately doing today.

What was your very first job? What does it feel like to look back at it now?
Serving drinks and food at a beach club in The Hague. Funny to look back because the place was terrible and I was even more terrible at the job. But there was always a nice band playing so that kept me going.

Please describe, in your own words, what your current job is and what work it entails.
I’m a Creative Director at VIRTUE, which is the creative agency of VICE. Challenging brands to be self-critical, real and culturally relevant. Every day I try to make stuff that I would want to watch, read or talk about.

How did you discover that the creative world is right for you? Was there a time in your life that you credit to this discovery? Which train of events did bring you to where you are today?
After studying Communication management I was lost and didn’t want to become an account manager (sorry for those who are). I hate talking about money and at an interview for an account internship I kept talking to the creative guy instead of the person who was interviewing me (which was not appreciated). Then I knew. So I moved to Amsterdam to start at the Hallo Academy, which was one of the best decisions of my life. I loved every minute of it.

In your constantly growing and expanding industry, how and where do you usually find inspiration to keep your work fresh, innovative and relevant?
Besides reading newspapers, books, watching movies and visiting art expo’s, I mainly get inspired by people. From talking to my mom, my neighbour who owns a snackbar or just a random person in the train. To stay fresh and prevent yourself from living and thinking in your own bubble, you need different perspectives.

If you had to pick one piece of work or project that you are most proud of, especially for the creative work and innovation it required rather than its recognition or industry success, what would it be?
Last year we made the Xmas ABC, a Video Series for Bol.com with Dutch Comedian Joardy Film. For every shitty Christmas situation, he has the most hilarious solution. It has a very dry sense of humour and was very ballsy of bol.com to go ahead with. In one of the video's we even destroyed one of their chairs with a chainsaw.
